At Your Local is a documentary series celebrating the role local cafes play in shaping the communities around them. After six episodes across New Zealand, the series now arrives in Australia, where we'll be visiting some of the country's most loved neighbourhood cafes and the people behind them.
Our first stop is Valentinas in Sydney's Inner West, where we spend time with co-owners Scott Clark and Elise Honeybrook alongside venue manager Luke Hanlon to explore what has made one of the city's busiest neighbourhood diners such a local favourite.
On any given weekend, Valentinas is loud, busy and just a little chaotic. The extractor hums, conversations overlap and every seat is full. Somehow, amidst the noise, it all works.
For venue manager Luke, that's what cafes are supposed to be. Growing up in a small town in south-east England, he naturally gravitated towards hospitality because of the people. Cafes offered familiarity, consistency and connection. Today, he sees them as one of the few places where strangers still cross paths, conversations happen naturally and communities quietly form around everyday rituals.
Scott and Elise opened Valentinas to create the kind of diner they struggled to find themselves. The menu is built around comforting classics done well. Proper pancakes, biscuits with maple butter, generous breakfasts and plenty of coffee, all served without unnecessary fuss.
Opening weekend was everything they could have hoped for, and everything they couldn't prepare for. The queues stretched down the street, the kitchen sold out of food and the team scrambled to keep up. It was overwhelming, but it confirmed they'd built something people had been looking for.
Running a cafe isn't always glamorous. Every day brings new challenges and no two services are ever the same. But the goal never changes. As Scott puts it,
"Someone might come back 100 times. Someone might only come once, but they've got to get the same experience. A reliably nice experience."
