FAQ
Why are you changing the packaging?
Regulations have shifted, and we’re always looking for ways to keep your coffee fresher, longer. So, we’re rolling out an upgraded bag that does just that — better durability, better freshness, and built-in degassing magic.
Why didn’t you change to soft plastic packaging?
Soft plastic recycling sounds great in theory — in reality, it’s a bit of a mess — trust us, we’ve been there, done that. Plus, the main recycling program collapsed in 2022. The process is complicated, expensive, and often results in plastic being turned into low-quality materials with limited use. Even a bit of food residue can ruin entire batches. So instead of jumping on a broken bandwagon, we’re focusing on reducing plastic use altogether — because less is better than “recycled” when it comes to soft plastics.
What is the environmental impact of the bag change, and how are you reducing that impact?
Yes, we’re using more plastic than the current bag, and no, commercial composting systems aren’t widely available yet. But we’re not just sitting on our hands — we’re partnering with amazing people like Sea Cleaners (preserving New Zealand’s coastlines by removing waste from sea, streams and estuaries) and Emu Parade (preserving Australia’s coastlines by removing rubbish from the beaches) as part of our commitment to offset our impact. The work isn’t done, but we’re on it.
Will this impact the flavour of my coffee?
Yes, in the best way possible. The improved barrier and degassing valve keep things tasting great for longer, so your coffee stays on point from the first pour to the last.
Now that the bag has a valve, will the coffee age differently?
Yep! The slower degassing process means our coffee stays at its peak longer. Expect it to be tasting best between days 7-21.
Do I have to do anything differently?
A little, but nothing wild. The degassing valve means coffee needs a bit more time to hit its sweet spot. Just keep at least a week’s stock on hand, which is probably what you’re already doing.
What is the new bag made out of?
A kraft-paper exterior with a barrier lining (foil and plastic and valve) that locks in freshness while keeping your coffee tasting its best.
Is the new packaging recyclable?
Not yet, unfortunately. Soft plastic recycling is hit-or-miss, and coffee bags are tricky. But we’re working on future solutions while making sure we offset our impact.
How does this fit into your B Corp program?
Balancing sustainability with keeping your coffee-tasting elite isn’t always easy, but we do what we can. Where perfect solutions don’t exist yet, we focus on making the best choices available and offsetting where we can.
Does the new bag have the B Corp logo?
Yes, the B Corp logo is being added to our packaging. However, not all bags will feature it immediately, as some were finalised before our certification was confirmed. The logo will appear on all packaging by the end of 2025.
Can I put the bag in soft plastic recycling?
Right now, no. But we’ll keep pushing for better options. It needs to be disposed of in the same way as our current bag.
